Frequently Asked Questions
When should I register as self-employed?
You must register as self-employed with HMRC by 5th October after the end of the tax year in which you started self-employment. For example, if you started in May 2024, you need to register by 5th October 2025.
What expenses can I claim?
You can claim fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, insurance, phone bills, and app service fees. Keep all receipts and maintain a mileage log. Use the simplified expenses method for vehicle costs at 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles.
Do I need to register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £85,000 in any 12-month period. This includes income from all self-employed work, not just delivery earnings.
How do I handle multiple delivery platforms?
Keep separate records for each platform but combine all earnings on your Self Assessment. You still only need one UTR number. Use our platform income tracking feature to automatically categorize earnings.
